Norwich Meadows Farm is dedicated to producing the highest quality organic eggs and and organically raised poultry. Since our beginnings, poultry and eggs have always been a major part of our farming. Presently. Norwich Meadows Farm has approximately 1500 chickens. These consist of different varieties and various age groups.
The two main groups are egg producers (layers) and meat producers (broilers). The egg producers consist of Cornish layers, of which some are blond sexlink chicks that are two months old, red sexlink first year layers, Cornish black sexlinks, Araconas that lay green eggs rather than the traditional brown egg, and older red sexlinks. The various colors allow us to keep track the chicken’s age.
Egg producers can be kept for a period of two to three years. The average layer will produce approximately 320 eggs per year (one every 25 hours)
Broiling chickens arrive frequently at the farm as day-old chicks, as they are ready for the dinner table by the age of eight to 10 weeks. We currently have a number of month-old chicks, two-week old and many less than one-week old. These are all Cornish cross.
All chickens are fed a varied diet of organic soy, organic corn, minerals, and organic greens. In addition, they will forage for insects and wild grasses. The chickens are fed twice a day and will eat approximately one-quarter pound of grain. Diet is also responsible for the color of the yolk. Chickens that are pasture raised on a natural and organic diet and allowed to forage for insects and receive adequate sunshine will produce a yolk that has a deep yellow to orange color.
The chickens and turkeys are also given organic yogurt once a year which acts as a cure-all for constipation, stomach ailments, etc. The turkeys are given yogurt when they are chicks.
