About Fresh Fast Lady Cowpeas

A remarkably creamy Southern pea bred by Oregon plant breeder Carol Deppe for exceptional flavor, earliness, and vigor.

Our cowpeas are Fast Lady Northern Southern Peas, a variety developed by renowned plant breeder and author Carol Deppe and offered by Row 7 Seed Company. Deppe spent eight years selecting this variety from a Lady pea—an old Southern type prized for its small cream-colored peas, delicate skins, and fine texture.

Southern peas, also known as cowpeas, originated in West Africa and became an important part of African diaspora foodways throughout the American South. Fast Lady was bred to preserve the wonderful eating quality of traditional Lady peas while producing earlier and more reliably in northern climates.

What Do They Taste Like?

Fresh Fast Lady Cowpeas are sweet, succulent, and delicate, with a wonderfully creamy texture. Their fine flavor makes them excellent simply simmered with herbs and olive oil, as well as in Southern-style peas, salads, rice dishes, soups, and stews.

How to Prepare Them

Shell the fresh peas from their pods, rinse, and simmer gently until tender. No soaking is necessary. The fresh shelly peas cook quickly and evenly and are especially good prepared simply, allowing their delicate flavor and creamy texture to shine.
