About Romano Beans
Romano beans originated in Italy, where they have long been treasured as one of summer’s finest vegetables. Grown on climbing pole plants rather than compact bushes, they produce long, broad pods that develop outstanding sweetness and tenderness when harvested young.
Unlike standard round green beans, Romano beans have a flatter shape, richer flavor, and more substantial texture. Their broad pods hold up beautifully during cooking while remaining crisp-tender, making them equally suited to simple family meals and refined restaurant preparations.
Available Varieties
- Green Romano Pole Beans — Deep green pods with a rich, full bean flavor and firm, tender texture.
- Yellow Romano Pole Beans — Bright golden pods with a slightly milder, buttery flavor and the same broad, succulent texture.
- Mixed Romano Pole Beans — A colorful combination of Green and Yellow Romano beans, depending on seasonal availability.
How to Use Romano Beans
Romano beans require very little preparation beyond trimming the stem ends. Their broad shape and hearty texture make them especially well suited to high-heat cooking, where they become lightly caramelized while remaining juicy and tender inside.
- Grill until lightly charred and crisp-tender
- Sauté with garlic, olive oil, and fresh herbs
- Blanch and finish with butter, lemon, or vinaigrette
- Roast alongside tomatoes, onions, or summer squash
- Slowly braise with tomatoes, garlic, and herbs
- Add to pasta, grain salads, vegetable stews, or composed summer dishes
One of Our Favorite Summer Preparations
One of our favorite ways to prepare Romano beans is inspired by our longtime customer, Chef Missy Robbins of Lilia, Misi, and MISIPASTA in Brooklyn.
Grill the beans over high heat until lightly charred while still crisp-tender. Toss them while warm with garlic-infused extra-virgin olive oil, fresh lemon juice, and chopped parsley, then finish with fresh basil, mint, and flaky sea salt.
The broad, flat shape of Romano beans gives them more surface area than ordinary green beans, allowing them to develop smoky, caramelized edges while retaining their natural sweetness and satisfying texture.
While supplies are available, your order may include a small selection of fresh herbs from the farm to complement this preparation.
Why They’re Different
Romano beans are not simply oversized green beans. Their thick, flat pods deliver a richer bean flavor, greater sweetness, and a more substantial bite than most conventional varieties.
Unlike grocery-store beans selected primarily for durability and shelf life, ours are harvested at peak tenderness and packed shortly before shipping. Starting with freshly harvested beans preserves the crisp texture, sweetness, and full flavor that make Romano beans so exceptional.
Seasonal Availability
Fresh Romano beans are available only during their summer growing season. Supply changes with field conditions, and each variety may reach peak production at a slightly different time.
